Solid gold is naturally waterproof and never discolours. However it is expensive — a gold necklace can easily cost hundreds of euros. Good for those who want to invest in jewellery for life.
Platinum
Platinum is more durable than gold and fully waterproof. But again: the price is high. Platinum Islamic jewellery is fairly rare.
What should you avoid?
Not every piece of jewellery that looks beautiful is also waterproof. Watch out for these materials:
- Gold plated: A thin layer of gold on base metal. After a few weeks of washing, the gold layer disappears and you see the base metal underneath.
- 925 silver: Silver reacts to water, air and sweat. It darkens quickly without regular polishing.
- Brass and copper: React strongly to water and turn green. Never waterproof.
Waterproof and wudu
A frequently asked question: do you need to remove Islamic jewellery for wudu? Islamic scholars generally agree that small jewellery such as rings and necklaces do not need to be removed for wudu, as long as water can flow underneath.
